How long does it take for me to receive my tax return2024-12-18T10:10:11+00:00

Electronic tax returns are usually processed by the ATO within two weeks. We expect that most refunds will be out within 10 working days after the lodgement of your tax return, but some people will wait a bit longer for the ATO to get it done.

How long do I need to keep my receipts for?2024-12-18T10:09:51+00:00

Records are written evidence of your income or expenses and can be in either paper or electronic form. Throughout the income year, you will receive documents that are important for your tax purposes. You need to keep records for five years (in most cases) from the date you lodge your tax return. Records may include income statements, payment summaries, and receipts.

Can I claim tools and equipment that I bought for my job on my tax?2024-12-18T10:09:39+00:00

There is often confusion about which expenses can be claimed for both business and personal use. For example, if you purchase a lawnmower for your landscaping business but also use it to mow your own lawn, you should apportion the cost based on how often you use it for each purpose.

For any tool costing less than $300, you can claim the full amount on this year’s tax return. For tools over $300, the cost must be claimed progressively over their useful life. This is known as depreciation, ensuring that your claim reflects the actual value of the tool.

Accelerated depreciation rules apply to sole traders and businesses with an annual income below $5 billion. In these cases, any equipment costing less than $150,000 can be fully written off in the year it was purchased. This provides a great incentive for businesses to update their equipment before 30 June each year.

You can claim the cost of any tools or equipment purchased for work purposes, including power tools, computers, printers, safety gear, sunglasses, office equipment, and any other items that assist with your income-generating activities.

What are ABNs and TFNs?2024-12-18T10:05:18+00:00

ABNs, or Australian Business Numbers, are issued to businesses and self-employed individuals operating in Australia. An ABN is required on invoices for any work performed, provision of services or sale of products.

A Tax File Number (TFN) is essential for anyone working in Australia. This number is provided to your employer when you start a job, allowing them to deduct tax from your income under the Pay As You Go (PAYG) system. Generally, employees don’t have to worry about end-of-year tax payments, as their employers withhold tax from your pay. You still need to lodge a tax return.

In contrast, when you operate under an ABN, tax isn’t deducted at the source. Instead, you receive full payment for your products or services, meaning you should set aside a portion of your income to cover your tax obligations at the end of the financial year.

Confusion often arises when individuals hold two jobs in one year—one under a TFN and another under an ABN—or when they have a full-time TFN job alongside a small business generating ABN income. We can guide you more in detail how they both play a part in your tax return and your earnings.
